Taliban fighters in northern Afghanistan heavily damaged the German consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif with suicide bomb attacks late Thursday, and fought their way into the building during an intense gun battle that lasted for hours. NATO troops and Afghan security forces said they were securing the building and preparing to evacuate consulate staff.
