Pakistan: Community midwives provide inexpensive, local obstetric care in rural areas

KASUR, Pakistan, 19 May 2010 – When Mussarat Pervaiz gave birth to her first child eight years ago, she travelled to a private health facility where she paid more than $60 for the delivery. For the wife of a steel factory worker in a north-western Pakistan village, this sum – which was repeated for four more births – was considerable.
