Istanbul: On the Scene

A few hours into the coup, supporters of President Tayyip Erdogan were taking to the streets to challenge the military coup. VOA journalist Dorian Jones has made his way to Istanbul's Taksim Square, considered the modern heart of the city, and a symbol of the nation. There were a few hundred people peacefully protesting on the square — most of them opposing the coup. About 20 infantry soldiers watched over them, Jones said, without the backing of the tanks or armored vehicles deployed...
