Washington Celebrates Panda Birth

Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub Saturday in Washington, setting off a flurry of news bulletins, Internet chatter and region-wide hopes for the mother and her new offspring. In a lengthy statement, the Smithsonian's National Zoo said its medical team witnessed the birth Saturday afternoon and that Mei Xiang reacted favorably to her newborn by picking it up.  The sex of the cub will not be determined until a later date.
