Q&A: Trump Administration’s “Remain in Mexico” Program

On January 25, 2019, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). MPP, also known as “Remain in Mexico.” The policy allows US border officers to return non-Mexican asylum seekers to dangerous locations in Mexico as their claims are adjudicated in US immigration courts, nearly all without the benefit of legal assistance.
