HRW Submission to the Universal Periodic Review of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s poor human rights record has regretably deterioriated since its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in October 2014. Authorities cracked down on peaceful protests critical of government policies, and in mid-2016 jailed activists Maks Bokaev and Talgat Ayan each for five years for peacefully expressing their views. Following the adoption of a restrictive trade union law in 2014, authorities shut down the largest independent trade union and jailed two trade union leaders.
