Dissatisfaction at home over Russian losses in World War I led to Tsar Nikolai II's abdication of the Romanov throne and, several months later, the Bolshevik Revolution, sealed with the execution of the royal family by the new Soviet authorities in the Ural mountain city of Yekaterinburg.
