Iran: Activist “severely beaten” in detention after Lake Oroumieh protest

15 September 2011 Plain-clothes officers reportedly beat Faranak Farid so severely that she temporarily lost hearing in an ear and was left unable to move one arm. Amnesty International has urged authorities in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province to thoroughly investigate reports that a women’s rights activist was tortured in custody amid mass arrests following environmental protests about a saltwater lake.
