To International Transport Federation, to Red Cross Society, to the governments of Russia , Spain , Malta and Finland , from wives of 4 sailors of m/v Arctic Sea , who’re still kpet on board of the vessel.

Statement

We’re wives of four crew members of the m/v Arctic Sea , we’re crying for help. Today is September 24, m/v Arctic Sea was highjacked two months ago. In August 17 vessel was freed from highjackers by Russian Navy. Four crew members – Master of the ship, Chief and 2nd engineer, and bosun, were left on board for maintaining the vessel.

For 10 days our husbands were waiting for arrival of the group of investigators from General Attorney Russia , for investigation. We didn’t have communication with our husbands during that time. Group was on board of the vessel during 10 days and didn’t find anything criminal or suspicious, only cargo – timber. Sailors aren’t blamed or incriminated anything wrong, they’re in a victims status.

On September 19 prosecutors left the vessel. Till September 19, our husbands managed to call us all in all four times, speaking each time during 1-1.5 minutes. We don’t have any communication with them from September 18.

Our husbands – all of them – are in a bad health, Master suffering ill hand, Chief Engineer complains headaches, 2 Engineer and bosun both suffering backaches. Fresh water is about to finish, 10 minutes per day of a cold water for all needs. Food is inadequate and scarce.

All of them psychologically are in a stress mood, one month of being kidnapped and another one in a total information and communication isolation. No country yet took responsibility to let the vessel enter any port to finally let our husbands go – not Russia , nor Spain or Malta . If they are victims of a crime, namely highjacking, they are to be at home under doctors observance or in a hospital. We are told by Russian authorities, that our husbands are free to leave the vessel, nobody is detaining them. But could they, if they don’t have any papers – their passport were destroyed by highjackers. Besides, our husbands just can’t run away from the vessel and leave the vessel on it’s own. The question is – why they have to be aboard and maintain the vessel, why can’t they be changed by a new crew.

Now about us. For two months we’re on the verge of a breakdown, praying for our beloved ones. We’re all ill

- Master’s wife was for two weeks in a hospital in intensive therapy ward;

- Bosun’s wife – 3 weeks in a hospital in intensive therapy ward with hypertensic crisis;

- 2 Engineer’s wife – ulcer exacerbation;

- Chief Engineer’s wife has to postpone surgery till the return of her husband.

Now everything is in a standstill. We’ve been asking for a solution, for a way out, both shipowner and Russian authorities. Only Maritime Union, Arkhangelsk Branch, is helping, all others just don’t care. We are four desperate women, we’re asking all who can help us for a help, please return to us, to families, our beloved ones.
With hope,
