The US and other NATO states are supplying arms to Afghanistan that could be used for serious human rights violations, warns Amnesty International. At this week's NATO Summit in Bucharest (2-4 April), the organization is expressing its concern about excessive quantities of small arms, light weapons and munitions being supplied by member states of NATO and allied states to local Afghan security forces and police. There is a substantial risk that such equipment will be used for serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. (Full Story)

Toronto -   Hundreds of Canadians marched Sunday March 28, 2008, to denounce China's occupation of Tibet. Protesters called on the Canadian government to to do more pressure on the Chinese governement on its human rights record. (Full Story)
Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown says his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao has told him he is willing to talk with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, under certain conditions. Mr. Brown said Mr. Wen told him during a phone conversation Wednesday he is willing to talk with the Dalai Lama if he renounces violence and says he does not support Tibet's full independence. Al-Qaida leader Baitullah Mehsud, blamed by the Pakistan government for killing Benazir Bhutto, denied any involvement in her death. There was no involvement in this attack, said spokesman Maulana Omar. ''It is against tribal tradition and custom to attack a woman,'' Omar said. (Full Story)
Pakistan's government says al-Qaida terrorists were behind the assassination of opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The Interior Ministry spokesman, Brigadier Javed Cheema, told reporters Friday the government had recorded intelligence intercepts during which al-Qaida leader Baitullah Mehsud congratulated terrorists for killing Ms. Bhutto. Islamabad - Aides to Pakistan's former Prime Minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto say she has been assassinated. Western and Pakistani news agencies said Ms. Bhutto died after sustaining injuries in a suicide attack at election rally near the capital, Islamabad. Ms. Bhutto had just addressed a gathering in a park in Rawalpindi, near the capital, Islamabad, when a blast went off. There were also reports of gunfire. (Full Story)
Ottawa - Friends and classmates of a 16-year-old girl who police say was murdered by her father in a Toronto suburb told local media Tuesday she was killed for not wearing a hijab. Police said in a statement they received an emergency call Monday evening from a man who said that he had just killed his daughter. (Full Story)

Hong Kong – As the one-year countdown celebrations for the 2008 Olympics came to a close in Beijing, eight Tibetan independence activists were deported to Hong Kong. Six of the activists had been arrested yesterday for unfurling a protest banner on the Great Wall of China. The two others were Lhadon Tethong and Paul Golding, who were detained by Chinese police in Beijing at approximately 2pm Beijing time today. Ms. Tethong, a Tibetan and Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet, has been openly reporting for the past week on China's Olympics-related propaganda on her blog, www.BeijingWideOpen.org.
