According to campaign organiser, Maryam Namazie, ‘Even in civil matters, Sharia law is discriminatory, unfair and unjust, particularly against women and children. Moreover, its voluntary nature is a sham; many women will be pressured into going to these courts and abiding by their decisions. These courts are a quick and cheap route to injustice and do nothing to promote minority rights and social cohesion. Public interest, particularly with regard to women and children, requires an end to Sharia and all other faith-based courts and tribunals.'

Montreal – Two four-time winners are among the list of winners of the 2008 Governor General’s Literary Awards announced on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, by the Canada Council for the Arts. The awards are given in the categories of fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction, children’s literature (text and illustration) and translation, in English and in French.

Rome - The European Parliament is sending a delegation to Italy in order to observe the conditions of the Roma people. According to EveryOne Group: “The visit is a farce, because out of the 29 delegates 22 are Italian, including Euro MPs from far right parties, like Fiore and Romagnoli. More than an inspection, it will provide support for intolerant policies”.

Rome - The hot weather has had drastic effects on the Roma settlements in Italy, encouraging the spread of mycotic and bacterial infections, and aggravating diseases of the respiratory and digestive tracts, and creating heart and neurological problems. Health care for the Roma people is practically non-existent, they are denied essential medicines - which only in some cases are prescribed by doctors, but which the Roma have to pay for.

On May 17th and 18th, 2008 the Hungarian Euro MP, Viktoria Mohacsi, carried out an inspection of several Roma settlements in Italy, in Rome and Naples. In Naples she talked to some Roma families during the period of the pogroms, of the criminalization by the media, the racist patrols and the “zero tolerance” (in other words “zero rights”) being carried out by the police force. Mrs Mohacsi listened to accounts of a persecutory phenomenon being carried out against the Roma that EveryOne has been calling attention to for the last two years.

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the 2010 G8 Summit will be held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario. It will be the fifth G8 Summit hosted by Canada since the country joined the prestigious international organization in 1976. The Prime Minister was joined at the announcement by Tony Clement, Canada’s Health Minister and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka.
