Independent Reporting on Xinjiang Abuses Requires Unfettered Access, Not Stage-Managed Visits

The High Commissioner for Human Rights has requested unfettered access to conduct an independent assessment of the human rights situation in China’s Xinjiang region. We welcome China’s stated willingness to cooperate – technically – with the High Commissioner by facilitating access. For this to move beyond technical cooperation into actual cooperation will require that any such access be genuinely unfettered and unrestricted, features noticeably absent from previous arranged diplomatic visits to Xinjiang.
