Mexican journalist murdered while under federal protection

NewsReporters Without Borders (RSF) is appalled to learn that Francisco Romero Díaz, a freelance crime reporter who was receiving Mexican government protection, was murdered today in Playa del Carmen, in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo. He was the fifth journalist to be slain this year in Mexico, now the world’s deadliest country for the media.RSF has been told that Romero received a phone call at around 5 a.m. today urging him to go at once to a nearby bar called La Gota to cover an important event.
