GE Cutting Thousands of European Jobs after Takeover Deal

General Electric Co. is cutting up to 6,500 jobs in Europe after buying a big chunk of French engineering company Alstom, but sticking to pledges to create a net 1,000 jobs in France. The French government, facing chronic 10 percent unemployment and a struggling industrial sector, had been concerned that the $17 billion Alstom takeover deal in 2014 would cause layoffs.
