Les étudiants avaient de quoi se révolter : amphithéâtres archi-bondés, facultés vétustes et un nouveau système de diplômes qui allait créer des injustices flagrantes. La masse des jeunes était également opposée à la guerre du Vietnam et à la tentative de l’impérialisme nord-américain de rétablir son contrôle sur le Sud-Est asiatique. En France, cette sympathie spontanée fut encore plus forte, en partie à cause des liens entre le Parti communiste français (PCF) et le gouvernement nord-viêtnamien.
