30 Years On, Chernobyl Evacuees Yearn Return to ‘Death Zone'

In the early hours of April 26, 1986, Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in then Soviet-controlled Ukraine exploded, releasing huge amounts of radiation into the air. One-hundred-sixteen-thousand people living around the plant were evacuated, and 220,000 more were forced to leave in subsequent years as the so-called contaminated ‘death zone’ was expanded.
