Kurds in Iraq Launch Offensive to Retake Sinjar

Thousands of Kurdish fighters launched an operation Thursday to recapture the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar from the Islamic State group. The militants seized Sinjar in August 2014 as they terrorized the area's Yazidi minority and besieged thousands of them in the mountains. It was that offensive that drew the first of more than 5,000 airstrikes from a U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
