Call them savannah, prairie, steppes or the plains — grasslands cover one third of the earth’s surface. How they are grazed helps determine how healthy they are. As Shelley Schlender discovered at a national wildlife preserve in the state, ranchers are a partner in maintaining healthy grass, and cattle are the preferred grazing animal.
