Washington Celebrates Panda Birth

Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub Saturday in Washington, setting off a flurry of news bulletins, Internet chatter and region-wide hopes for the mother and her new offspring. In a lengthy statement, the Smithsonian's National Zoo said its medical team witnessed the birth Saturday afternoon and that Mei Xiang reacted favorably to her newborn by picking it up.
