UN panel recognizes lack of political will to protect journalists

Participants in a panel discussion on journalists' safety, held yesterday in Geneva during the UN Human Rights Council's 26th session, were unanimous in recognizing a lack of political will on the part of governments to do what is necessary to protect journalists. The participants included UNESCO deputy director-general Getachew Engida, the OSCE's media freedom representative, Dunja Mijatovic, and the UN special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, Frank La Rue.
