Florence (Italy) -This morning Police Headquarters and the local authorities decided to step up the measures against the Roma people as part of a security plan created after two murders took place in the city during criminal activities. Despite Roma citizens being extraneous to these two episodes, the authorities have singled them out as the prime subjects for their repressive measures, which include camp clearances with no offer of alternative housing. Milan (Italy) - In spite of the recent resolution issued by the European Parliament reasserting the illegality of the camp clearances without alternative lodgings; despite the warning from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that Roma settlements must be protected and the forced evictions stopped, the Milanese local authorities, undaunted, are still persecuting the Roma and Sinti communities present on its territory. Treviso (Italy) - After the verdict issued by the Court of Cassation earlier this year (where, when sentencing the culprit of attacks on centres of Islamic culture the judges claimed “racism is not part of the traditions of the Italian people”) the Court of Treviso has now issued another disturbing sentence. Geneva -The 5th International Day for Mine Awareness took place on April 4th under the aegis of the United Nations. The event coincides with a new international commitment to the fight against a scourge that violates the right to life of millions of human beings. (Full Story)
Milan (Italy) -Women fleeing from countries where humanitarian crises are underway often fall victim to physical assault, violence and rape. Today, thanks to a report by Médecins Sans Frontiéres, numerous case have come to light of women being raped during their “journeys of hope”, on their way to Morocco, and sometimes on Moroccan soil. Milan - From the fire in Livorno to the murders of Abdul Salam Guibre, the Romanian Ionut Cristian Birzudel, and the Moroccan Yussuf Errahali, there have been many murders committed for racist reasons - murders that are often (when there are no witnesses or surveillance cameras present) reported in the newspapers as “a settling of accounts between immigrants”.

Sometimes it is their poverty that kills them, that forces them to warm themselves in the harsh winter with dangerous means: old heaters, candles, spirit stoves.
