Le général Ahmed Gaïd Salah a dirigé le pays après la démission forcée en avril dernier du président Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Le général Salah, le très puissant chef d'état-major de l'armée, est décédé d'une crise cardiaque lundi, quatre jours à peine après l'investiture du nouveau chef de l'Etat dans un pays confronté depuis dix mois à des manifestations d’envergure.
