De nombreux chefs d'Etat africains ont utilisé le procédé pour se maintenir au pouvoir: le président guinéen Alpha Condé a finalement annoncé un projet de nouvelle Constitution, manœuvre présumée pour briguer un troisième mandat fin 2020. Les manifestations contre un tel projet ont déjà fait au moins 20 morts en deux mois en Guinée. L'opposition crie au "coup d'Etat constitutionnel".
