Ibtihaj Muhammad est devenue en 2016 la première sportive américaine voilée à participer aux Jeux olympiques, alors qu'une polémique a contraint la marque Decathlon à renoncer en France à la commercialisation d'un hijab de sport. Nike qui sponsorise Muhammad, le fait "pour répondre au besoin d'une communauté ayant une croyance religieuse", selon Bert Hoyt, le vice-président de la marque en charge du football.
