Star Trek Turns 50

To celebrate here are 5 fast Star Trek facts. The first Star Trek episode aired September 8, 1966 and was cancelled after only 3 seasons. But it found enough love in syndication that it came back. Did you hear that Containment? There might be some hope after all.The idea for the cell phone came from Captain Kirk’s communicator. Motorola’s Martin Cooper was on break when he saw Kirk call Scotty and the rest is history. It's crazy the don't even have iPhones in the 23rd century.Nichelle Nichols became the first African American woman on TV not playing a servant. At one point she wanted to quit, but guess who asked her to change her mind. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King said he was Nichelle’s biggest fan and she was a role model for young black women…and apparently 30 something black civil rights leaders too.Star Trek also made history with the first scripted interracial kiss on US television between William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols... (off picture of Shatner dressed in toga) Apparently Nichelle crashed a toga party. And finally there was a role written for Eddie Murphy in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. But Murphy didn’t like his role and he dropped out to play The Golden Boy. I’ll just let the Rotten Tomatoes reviews tell you how good of a decision that was.Happy birthday Star Trek. Live long and prosper...
