Lina, Tarek and their young daughters, Laya and Linette, left Syria in the autumn to reach safety in Europe. In September they paid a smuggler $10,000 for what they were told would be a safe boat that would take them across the Aegean Sea from Turkey to Greece. When the overcrowded wooden boat capsized, they lost eight-year-old Laya. A UNHCR protection officer helped with their recovery, and the family wanted to tell them their story
