Le cas de M. Atangana avait retenu l’attention du Groupe de travail des Nations unies sur la détention arbitraire. Dans un avis rendu en novembre 2013, le Groupe a estimé que ses « 17 années de prison étaient arbitraires », a rappelé Sétondji Roland Adjovi, membre africain du Groupe.
