Playing the Jerusalem Card

How many times have you heard the words – “Jerusalem: Israel’s Eternally Undivided Capital?” They are words designed to tug at the emotions, to play on religious sentiments, to invoke a false version of history but, in the main, they constitute a powerful political slogan, exercised by Israel’s right wing and their Christian evangelical allies. In recent discussions with the Palestinians, the Olmert government dared to talk about a possible division of the city and it provoked a storm of opposition, even within the government.
