Sur le plan des libertés publiques, les Kurdes en Turquie et en Syrie sont autorisés à pratiquer leur langue, mais ils n’ont pas le droit de la diffuser. Différentes lois interdisent la reconnaissance des enfants sous des noms kurdes, les noms de lieux géographiques en langue kurde sont remplacés par des noms turcs ou arabes. L’enseignement de la langue kurde est interdit dans les établissements scolaires de ces deux pays, qui nient l’existence même d’un peuple et d’une culture kurdes.
