Egypt. Mubarak urges citizens to stand up against terrorism

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has urged citizens of all faiths, including Copts and Muslims to stand up against what he called terrorist acts such as the church bombing that killed at least 21 people early Saturday. Scores of others were wounded.

Mr. Mubarak expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

The attack occurred just a half hour into the New Year in the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria where worshippers had gathered to celebrate Mass on New Year's Eve.

The explosion came from a car parked in front of the church.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, which was followed by clashes between Christians and Muslims.

Al-Qaida's affiliate in Iraq has claimed responsibility for other recent bombings, saying they were retaliation for two Egyptian Christian women who converted to Islam. Al-Qaida says the women are being held hostage by the Christians for having converted.
