Egypt. Eritrean refugees subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment

There are currently about 300 Eritrean refugees being held in the Aswan prison in appalling sanitary conditions and subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment. Most of the refugees have come from the prison camps run by traffickers in northern Sinai, where they have been subjected to torture, beatings and rape.

Rome - On the border between Egypt and Israel, Alam Haji, a young 36-year-old Eritrean woman (in the photos*), a widow and mother of three children, was shot and riddled with bullets by the Egyptian border police on Friday, October 21st, 2011, as she made a vain attempt to cross the border to qualify for international protection.  (Full Story)

Rome - According to the latest information we have received, 361 Eritrean refugees (including 94 women, 10 children, 4 teenagers and a pregnant woman) fled from the UNHCR Shegerab Camp in an attempt to reach Northern Sinai. They later fell into the hands of Bedouin traffickers.  (Full Story)
