London - A new report showing that Muslim women are discriminated against and encounter gross bias when they subject themselves to Sharia adjudications was welcomed by The One Law for All Campaign, which is supported by a variety of organisations and individuals.

Nearly half (49%) of off-reserve First Nations children under 6 years of age live in low-income families, compared with 18% of non-Aboriginal children, while about 43% of Inuit children are living in a crowded dwelling, six times the proportion of 7% among non-Aboriginal children, according to a survey by Statistics Canada. The survey also reveals that more than one-quarter (27%) of off-reserve First Nations children under 6 years old have mothers between the ages of 15 and 24, compared with 8% of non-Aboriginal children.

The Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain's first international conference on Political Islam, Sharia Law and Civil Society held at Conway Hall on October 10 was a resounding success. Nearly 300 people came together to discuss issues ranging from apostasy, the freedom to criticise and renounce religion, Sharia law and civil society and creationism, faith schools and religious education. Held on the International Day against the Death Penalty, the conference was a stark reminder of the many killed or facing execution for apostasy in countries ruled by Islamic laws.

Rabbi Arik Ascherman is the Executive Director of Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR). The organization which he now leads was founded in 1988 and considers itself to be the “rabbinical voice of conscience in Israel.” With over one hundred ordained rabbis as its members, Rabbis for Human Rights spans the religious Jewish spectrum with members from the Reform, Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist and Renewal streams.

Seventeen-year-old Maryam traveled from Kazakhstan to Russia to work as a shop assistant. A man paid her parents $300 and forged her passport so she could work. When she arrived in Russia, armed guards kept Maryam locked in a cell with barred windows, where she was forced to work as a prostitute.

PRAGUE - Rarely do world leaders, past or present, come together to shine a spotlight on political dissidents -- the persecuted heroes of human rights and democracy. But that’s what happened this week (June 5-6, 2007) in Prague. And the Baroque Czernin Palace that houses the Czech Foreign Ministry could not have been a more emblematic venue for the two-day gathering.
