Kerry visits Egypt, US military aid resumes

US Secretary of State John Kerry has visited Egypt for talks with the country’s new president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.On the agenda were the government’s crackdown against Muslim Brotherhood, and the situation in the Middle East. The visit was notable for a resumption of military aid, which was frozen when the Arab spring swept President Mubarak from power.“The process he, (al-Sisi), has put in place, the re-evaluation of human rights legislation, a re-evaluation of the judicial process, are very much on his mind. He’s only been in office for 10 days, but he indicated to me that we should work closely,” said Kerry. Some 250 million euros of military aid has been made available, just a day after a Cairo court sentenced 182 Muslim Brotherhood members along with their leader to death for their role in the violence in the town of Minya last year, in which a police officer died.Saturday also saw a protest outside the presidential palace against the new restrictive protest laws. Several people were arrested.
