Google behind the wheel of self-driving cars

In this age of technology, the driver has become the passenger. Self-driving cars are here -- and Google has jumped on board. This promotional video showcases their driverless-car prototypes. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING: "There's no steering wheel in the way." Through automotive partnerships, Google is building small electric two seaters without steering wheels, accelerator pedals or brake pedals. In fact, they've been testing these cars since 2009. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING: "It knows when it needs to stop, it knows when it needs to go." Driverless cars are now limited to a maximum speed of 25 miles an hour, but could go past 100 miles per hour once they're proven safe. Google aims to build up to 200 such cars sooner rather than later, and hopes they will be available within a couple of years.
