Salma Hayek defends Cannes protest

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Hollywood star Salma Hayek defended her decision to stage a mini-protest on the red carpet at the Cannes film festival, after breaking with festival protocol on Saturday (May 17) by holding up a sign calling for the release of the 200 schoolgirls being kept hostage in Nigeria. The Mexican actress - currently in Cannes to promote a new movie - said she had always been involved with fighting for women's rights, adding that such issues should not be forgotten even in the midst of one of the most high profile celebrity events in the world. Hayek's the latest star to lend her name to a social media campaign appealing to their captors to set them free. Protests aren't allowed on the Cannes red carpet but the actress said the risk of incurring the wrath of organisers was one worth taking to promote the cause.
