The New York Police Department says officers will no longer confiscate unused condoms as evidence of prostitution by people suspected of being sex workers. The policy change was announced Monday following criticism that the practice undermined efforts to promote condom use. Police had confiscated condoms ostensibly as evidence in criminal trials. Civil rights groups argued police seized them as a way to harass sex work suspects and said the practice undercut efforts to combat sexually transmitted diseases. Prosecutors in Brooklyn and Long's Island Nassau County and in San Francisco already stopped using condoms as evidence of prostitution. Despite these dire predictions, the nation’s primary care system is handling the increased number of insured patients without major problems so far, according to interviews with community health centers, large physician practices and insurers nationwide. Federal health officials announced Monday, that a second case of the mysterious MERS virus has been found in Florida. Officials were preparing to release more details about the case later on Monday. Close to 500 cases of MERS have been reported to the World Health Organization.DR.
