Ukraine military barracks burn on eve of self-rule referendum

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Barracks at an abandoned Ukrainian military base in the eastern port city of Mariupol burned on Saturday night (May 10) on the eve of a referendum on self-rule in the country's southeast. A Mariupol news website said there was no information on how the fire started, nor any information on casualties, but that the base had been abandoned by troops and occupied by looters the day before. Mariupol was the site of heavy clashes on Friday (May 9) between Ukrainian soldiers who entered the city with armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and attacked a police station with RPGs. There were also street battles and gunfire between the soldiers and separatists trying to force them out of the city. The interior ministry said 20 rebels were killed in fighting on Friday, while hospitals put the number of dead at seven. The conflict has raised fears of civil war and pitched relations between Russia and the West into their worst crisis
