Turkey says Assad is "barrier" to humanitarian aid

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says his government is open to cooperating more on humanitarian aid issues -- but won't risk their "national sovereignty" to do so. Across the border, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says security isn't the issue. (SOUNDBITE) (English) TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER, AHMET DAVUTOGLU, SAYING: "The barrier is the regime, they do not allow (access), and U.N. Security Council unfortunately does not impose anything on the regime. Waiting for the mercy of the regime does not help us." All this ahead of the country's presidential election next month. A Syrian court has accepted Assad's bid for another term but he'll have to beat two other approved candidates. The challengers aren't expected to pose a serious threat, as Syria's opposition leaders in exile are barred from running.
