Syria rebels 'target airport'

Video footage purportedly showing Syrian rebels firing on the international airport in Latakia province. It's said to have been shot on March 31st. The footage is from a social media website which Reuters can't independently verify. Another clip purports to show rebels firing at what is said to be soldiers loyal to Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Islamist insurgents launched an offensive in the Latakia region about ten days earlier. Assad has sent army and militia reinforcements backed by air power. That's led to heavy fighting across a strip of territory along the Turkish border. Other social media website clips appear to show the aftermath of government air strikes on districts of Damascus. The government's been making gains around the capital and Aleppo in recent months. More than 140, 000 people have died in the conflict which began its fourth year this month.
