Syria fighting goes on, as Switzerland talks falter

Fighting did not stop in Syria, while talks in Switzerland have not resulted in any compromise between Bashar al-Assad's government and the opposition. A video posted on the internet on Friday (January 24) claims to show rebels firing rockets towards the airport in Aleppo. Another shows an image described to be an airstrike being carried out in the southern town of Zamalka. Reuters cannot independently verify the content of these videos. The Syrian government and the opposition are due to hold their first meeting on Saturday (January 25), to launch negotiations aimed at ending almost three years of conflict. Assad's representatives have refused to sign a 2012 statement calling for a transitional government in Syria. The opposition has said it will not meet the government side unless they sign the statement. The talks almost collapsed, and were put back on track, after UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi persuaded the two sides to focus on smaller issue
