Germany warns that there won't be any miracles at the Syria peace talks

The German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned on Wednesday (January 22) before the start of the Syria peace conference that there won't be any miracles but welcomes the facts that there are talks at all. "There won't be any miracles today but the fact that there are talks is a success," Steinmeier told journalists. "As far as I am concerned we are not on the verge of a breakthrough but I hope that we will be able to pave the ground for continuing talks in the next weeks and months." He said that he hopes for the conference to at least stop the further escalation of the violence in Syria and "perhaps create islands of calm." Steinmeier said that resignation is not an option, especially in light of thousands of photographs being released on the eve of the talks, reportedly showing prisoners tortured and killed by the government.
