Smoke covers Kiev as public defies new anti-protest laws

As day turns to dusk, smoke rises in Kiev. And a mass protest unleashes violence in the capital. Up to 100,000 Ukrainians turned out to defy a new law aimed at stamping out anti-government protests. As protesters try to overturn a bus blocking their path to parliament, others throw fireworks or anything else they can find on riot police. The unrest is part of the ongoing rallies against the government that started in November. That's when President Viktor Yanukovich ditched a free trade deal with the European Union. He favors closer economic ties with Ukraine's former Soviet overlord, Russia. The new anti-protest laws would ban any unauthorized installation of tents, stages or use of loud-speakers in public places. It's unknown how many protesters or police were injured in Sunday's demonstrations.
