Volcano in Indonesia continue to spew ash

An Indonesian volcano continued to spew out ash on Friday (January 17), forcing more residents to flee. The 2,460 meters high Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province remained at its highest alert level. The government's alert status is still at its highest level, after violent eruptions in recent months from the volcano that has lain dormant for four centuries. Local authorities said nearly 10,460 hectare of farming area have been destroyed, and the ash is spreading further as wind picks up speed. Some people stopped to take pictures of the large volume of ash coming out of the mouth of the volcano. But many more are packing up their belongings and leaving. According to the National Disaster Management Agency, more than 26,000 people have evacuated the surrounding areas and are staying in temporary shelters provided by local governments.
