Indian diplomat leaves U.S., arrives in New Delhi

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Indian diplomat Devy Khobragade arrived in New Delhi on Friday (Jan. 10) after being expelled from the U.S. as part of a deal in which she was granted diplomatic immunity from criminal charges Khobragade, India's deputy consul-general was accused of visa fraud and lying about underpaying her maid. She reportedly coached the nanny to mislead U.S. officials, confiscated her passport and made her work 100-hour, seven-day weeks, according to a U.S. grand jury indictment. Her December 12th arrest set off a furor in India amid disclosures that she was handcuffed and strip-searched. The month-long row has soured the broader U.S.-India bilateral relationship, leading to reprisals against American diplomats in New Delhi and the postponement of visits to India by senior U.S. officials and another by a U.S. business delegation.
