Carnage in Iraq

A shattered peace in Iraq. At least five people are killed Thursday in a string of car bombs in southern Iraq. No one is immediately claiming responsibility for the attacks. About 50 people were wounded in the blasts. In Hilla City the bombs targeted popular markets and a restaurant. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED RESTAURANT EMPLOYEE, SAYING: "Around 3 o'clock in the afternoon a truck went off here. I was inside the restaurant when all of a sudden a blast took place. I only felt the force of the blast. Innocent people were killed and others wounded. Some of the casualties are in hospital while others are still missing." Iraq is suffering from its worst surge in violence in the last five years. Militant attacks have increased as the civil war in Syria is further straining fragile Sunni-Shi'ite relations. The U.N. says nearly 1,000 people were killed across the country in October alone.
