Albanian 'no' deals blow to Syria chemical weapons plan

Negotiations to get rid of Syria's chemical weapon's arsenal went down to the wire. Spokesman for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical weapons, Christian Chartier, said they had come up with a plan. (SOUNDBITE) (English), OPCW SPOKESMAN, CHRISTIAN CHARTIER, SAYING: "Most of the chemicals, the most toxic of them, will have to be out of the Syrian territory by 31st December 2013." The decision however does not specify where the weapons will be destroyed or how they will be safely transported out of Syria in the midst of a civil war. After a storm of protests, Albania rejected a U.S. request to host the weapon's destruction. This refusal is a blow to the U.S.-Russian deal. There was no immediate indication where the United States or Russia would look to next to to destroy nearly 1,300 tonnes of sarin, mustard and other chemical weapons by the end of June 2014.
