An MRI test confirms that Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, leaving the AFC North leaders without another star player on defense. The Bengals suspected he'd torn the ACL, and a test in Cincinnati confirmed it on Friday. The Bengals already were missing top cornerback Leon Hall, out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, and middle linebacker Rey Maualuga , out indefinitely with a concussion and an injured left knee. Coach Marvin Lewis said Friday it's not a long-term injury. It's easy to write off the 3-5 Buffalo Bills as a team incapable of getting the job done against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. That's especially true if you haven't been watching the Bills play this season. There's a lot more to be said of this sub-.500 club, and it would be unwise for the Chiefs to simply write them off. For one thing, the Bills have been competitive in every one of their games this season. In fact, with the exception of last week's loss to the New Orleans Saints and a Week 5 slip-up against the Cleveland Browns, all of the Bills' losses this year have been decided by a touchdown or less. Monta Ellis evolved in his first regular season start with the Dallas Mavericks. In the Mavs' 2013-14 opener Wednesday night, he was named the "Player of the Game" in the team's 118-109 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Ellis had 37 minutes on the floor, during which he scored 32 points that included 11-of-17 field goals, 2-of-3 three-pointers and 8-of-8 free throws. The Texas Rangers wanted to keep closer Joe Nathan for another season. Unfortunately, the 38-year-old would prefer a two-year contract at this point in his career, which is something Texas simply will not do. There is no question the absence of Nathan in the bullpen could create some big problems for the Rangers next season.
