Floods plunge bankrupt, bloodsoaked Acapulco to new depths

Gangland violence and a looming bankruptcy had already taken the shine off the once glamourous Hollywood hangout of Acapulco, Mexico. Now recent catastrophic flooding is delivering another potentially devastating blow to the city. Once a playground for the rich and famous, by 2012 Acapulco had become the murder capital of Mexico, mired in a cycle of brutal slayings, kidnappings and extortion as drug gangs battling for control. Recently two tropical storms swamped the city. Roads were closed and the tourist-dependent city is now on the brink. Some lost just about everything. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) RESIDENT, VICTOR GARCIA, SAYING: "Cooker, refrigerator, oven, kitchen, bedrooms mattresses, bookshelves, television and everything was ruined."
