Violence continues in southern Philippines

EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL Philippine soldiers exchange fire with rebels in the south of the country as a showdown with the militants continues in to a second day. At least 6 people have been confirmed dead in the fighting in Zamboanga - the main city in this restive region. The militants attacked the area from the sea on Monday - taking hostages in outlying villages and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes. I don't care if I have to stay, one resident said. As long as we are alive. Officials say the militants are a rogue faction of the separatists, Moro National Liberation Front. They are negotiating for release of the hostages - even as the fighting rages.
