Ban leaves Seoul

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon left South Korea for the Netherlands on Tuesday (August 27) amid escalating violence in Syria. During his six-day visit to South Korea, Ban said he intended to conduct a "thorough, impartial and prompt investigation" into the latest allegations of the use chemical weapons in Syria. U.N. officials did not elaborate on the purpose of Ban's visit to the Netherlands. The U.S. State Department on Monday (August 26) postponed a meeting scheduled for Wednesday (August 28) in The Hague in the Netherlands between senior diplomats from the United States and Russia due to "ongoing consultations" over the chemical weapons attack in Syria. The meeting was set to discuss plans for an international peace conference to end the civil war in Syria.
